13 Ocak 1960’da Balıkesir’in Susurluk ilçesinde doğdu. On yaşında Ankara’ya taşındı ve 1971 yılında Sarar İlkokulu’nu bitirdi. Aynı yıl girdiği Ankara Atatürk Anadolu Lisesi’ni 1978’de birincilikle bitirdikten sonra Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesine girdi. Tıp Fakültesinden 1984 yılında ikincilikle mezun oldu ve Ankara 7 No.lu veremle Savaş Dispanserinde zorunlu hizmet yaptı. 1986-1990 arasında Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalında İç Hastalıkları ihtisasını tamamladı ve aynı yıl İnfeksiyon Hastalıkları Ünitesi’nde çalışmaya başladı. 1993 yılında yardımcı doçent oldu. 1993-1995 arasında iki yıl süreyle Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nde Houston’da M.D. Anderson Kanser Merkezi’nde Mikoloji ve Fungal İnfeksiyonlar Araştırma Birimi’nde “post-doctoral fellow” olarak çalıştı. 1995’de doçent, 2002 yılında profesör ünvanı alan Dr. Uzun’un uluslararası kongrelerde sunulmuş 41 bildirisi, uluslararası dergilerde yayınlanmış 46 makalesi, 25 yerli, 2 yabancı kitap bölümü bulunmaktadır.
Dr. Uzun'un bir kızı vardır. Tıp dışı ilgi alanları klasik müzik dinlemek, şiir ve roman yazmaktır (İngilizce ve Türkçe).
