Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine
Department of Internal Diseases
Hematology Subdivision
Hematology Subdivision was established by Prof. Faruk Özer, M.D. in 1972 within Department of Internal Diseases and it became a Subdivision in 2013. The outpatient clinic of Hematology Subdivision of Internal Diseases provides service on the 2nd floor of Internal Diseases building. Inpatient services used by Hematology Subdivision are Internal Diseases inpatient services in blocks 8 and 9. Furthermore, Ward 94 on the 9th floor serves as bone marrow transplantation unit.
Major groups of diseases associated with hematology are:
-
1. Disrupted formation of blood cells or hemoglobin in bone marrow (various types of anemia -lacking of blood-, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia)
-
2. Accelerated breakdown of blood cells (hemolytic anemia types, ITP, etc.)
-
3. Abnormality in the functions of blood cells (sickle-cell anemia, various functional abnormalities, etc.)
-
4. Abnormality in the coagulation of blood (types of hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, etc.)
-
5. Unrequired coagulation of blood within vascular system (thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, tromboflebite, etc.)
-
6. Cancerogenous blood cell forming bone marrow cells and lymph node cells (such as types of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma)
-
7. academic staff members, 4 secretaries, 1 biologist, 2 attendants and a varying number of physician assistants receiving subspecialty training work in the subdivision. Furthermore, different Department of Internal Diseases assistants and Faculty of Medicine students attending to Term VI are rotated in our Subdivision on a monthly basis.
A wide range of tests can be required for the diagnosis of blood diseases: Measuring the amount of blood cells and hemoglobin (complete blood count), analysis of subtypes of hemoglobin with electrophoresis, examining blood under a microscope (peripheral smear), examining bone marrow (bone marrow aspiration and biopsy) examining the levels of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid required for blood formation, testing blood coagulation, tests related to the functions and the lifespan of blood cells, examining the proteins produced by immune system cells, analyzing blood cells or chromosomes and other components of the bone marrow cells which form blood cells and radiological examinations are the most frequently needed tests in Hematology.
The diagnosis services which are most frequently given in our department are microscopic examination of blood and bone marrow as well as tests for abnormalities in blood coagulation. 3 laboratories are affiliated to the department: Tests related to various diseases which progress with disruption in the coagulation of blood or increased coagulation are done in Coagulation-Hemostasis Laboratory. Coagulation-Hemostasis Laboratory provides service to all of Hacettepe Hospitals and also responds to the incoming test requests from other centers on a frequent basis. In addition to complete blood count, the samples of blood smears called peripheral smear, and bone marrows are stained in CBC and staining laboratory. Molecular genetic analyses related to various blood diseases are performed in PCR laboratory.
Diagnosis and treatment of any type of hematologic disease mentioned above can be performed through contemporary methods in Hematology Unit. Diagnoses and treatments of certain diseases require the patient to be hospitalized. Certain treatments such as intravascular administrations of medication and blood transfusion can also be performed in the outpatient treatment unit of our Outpatient Clinic. Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Hematology Unit is the center in which Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation has been performed for the very first time in Turkey. Stem cell transplantation is still continued to be performed with success in our unit.

As of 2000, the external quality control of our laboratory has been conducted by UKNEQAS, an independent quality control body, and the internal quality control of our laboratory has been conducted by STAGO.
In order to receive examination in our outpatient clinic, you can book an appointment by dialing 444 4 444 or file an application via online appointment section available on the website of our hospital. If you believe that you are in need of an immediate examination, you can directly apply to the outpatient clinic at the beginning of the working hours in the morning, so that you can be introduced to the physician in charge. If it is understood in the pre-evaluation that the situation requires immediate examination, you will promptly be examined. Otherwise, you will be requested to book an appointment to a further date.
