Pediatric Oncology Subdivision
Pediatric Oncology was commissioned by Prof. Dr. Namık Çevik in January 1972, as a subdivision within Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics with its official name Pediatric Oncology Subdivision. Pediatric Oncology Subdivision has carried out activities in Department of Clinic Oncology of Cancer Institute at Hacettepe University Oncology Hospital as a part of Department of Pediatrics of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine.
From its foundation until now, Dr. Namık Çevik, Dr. Münevver Büyükpamukçu, Dr. Faik Sarıalioğlu, Dr. Canan Akyüz, Dr. Tezer Kutluk, Dr. Ali Varan, Dr. Bilgehan Yalçın and Dr. Güzide Burça Aydın joined to Pediatric Oncology Subdivision as academic staff. Apart from the 5 faculty members, there are 2 subspeacilists, 3 nurses, two secretaries, two assistant healthcare personnel , one psychologist and one teacher within the cadre of subdivision. Monthly basis pediatric rotation residents also participate in the patient care and treatment activities, along with the aforesaid academic staff and personnel experienced in cancer treatment and care.
Pediatric patients with solid tumors are evaluated and treated in the subdivision.
Treatments of childhood cancers and patient services are carried out in the unit. At the hospital, the activities on childhood cancers are conducted in collaboration with several disciplines, by being equally good with the centers in abroad. We are in collaboration with specialized physicians who study on tumor surgery in pediatric surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology and adult and pediatric pathology departments in where the childhood tumor samples are analyzed. There are a radiology center and a biochemistry division which offers service only for oncology patients. Patients have radiotherapy services required for protocol, in radiation oncology division of the hospital. Furthermore, there is a laboratory in where the medication resistances of patients with cancer are researched.
Families are receiving training on care of children with cancers in addition to the administrations of blood collection, injection, catheter care, blood products transfusion, chemotherapy for patients. There are 6 outpatient clinic patient examination rooms, a blood collection and vascular intervention room, an intervention room dedicated for bone marrow aspiration or biopsy and intrathecal chemotherapy procedures, a microscope room, a mother and baby breast-feeding room for babies, a play and activity room for school children along with youths and families in the outpatient clinic.
Daytime outpatient chemotherapy is administrated in four separate rooms, on 12 beds in total. Chemotherapy medications are prepared in a pharmacy which is equipped with the latest technology and dedicated only for this purpose.
The bone marrow aspiration, lumber puncture or cytocentrifuge analyses of other body fluids which are performed in diagnoses, treatments and treatment response measurements are evaluated by faculty members.
Apart from the Pediatric Oncology Outpatient Clinic, there is also Ward 92, Pediatric Oncology Service with 34 beds, in where the children are followed up by being hospitalized for diagnosis, chemotherapy administration or neutropenic fever and similar problems in Oncology Hospital.
The patients who applied our division with any cancer type diagnosis are examined and evaluated in the fastest way. Following control and treatment appointments can be booked by phone or applying in person.
Patients should bring their epicrises, all previous X-rays and reports (simple X-rays, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging), preparation and paraffin-embedded blocks if biopsy is performed. As in other oncology centers, all X-rays, pathology blocks and preparations should be affirmed in our center. Tests and samples to be brought will accelerate diagnosing and treating and will prevent needlessly performing tests again.
