In the department, the diagnoses and treatments of childhood lung diseases (cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, congenital anomalies, lung diseases in premature infants, bronchiolitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, pulmonary involvements in systemic diseases, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hemosiderosis, gastroesophageal reflux and hydatid disease (cystic echinococcosis)) are carried out by 4 faculty members, 1 specialist, 2 nurses and residents and intern physicians. The laboratories in where the pulmanory function tests and sweat tests are performed to diagnose diseases are located in the department, the procedures are performed by 2 technicians and by a chemist and there is another laboratory for thesis, studies and researches, which is under the responsibility of the chemist The sweat test laboratory in our department is one of themost reliable laboratories in Turkey. Blood, sputum sample, gastric lavage fluid collecting procedures and oxygen saturation through fingertip are performed by a nurse. Flexible bronchoscopy is performed by faculty members of the department, 2 anesthetists and a nurse, on certain days of the week in a special room in Ward 35 to visually evaluate and collect samples from upper respiratory tract and pulmonary airways.
The department has performed flexible bronchoscopy with the highest number in Turkey, so far, including the neonates.
Sweat test and pulmonary function tests are performed in the laboratory located in the department. These tests are requested for patients by the physicians, who are examined in any department of the hospital, after the request documents are approved at official documents or pay desk, the results are submitted to patients within the working hours (08:30- 12:00 and 13:30- 17:30) of the same day (the interpretation is made by the physician of each patient). Patients referred from other hospitals can have the tests performed by applying to the secretariat of the department with their referral documents within the working hours, the patients who do not have referral documents should pay the cost of tests to the pay desk. The patient do not need to fast pulmonary function and sweat tests, however pulmonary function tests can be performed on children over 5 years of age, since being easy going is required.
Flexible bronchoscopy procedure is performed to evaluate and to collect samples from upper respiratory tract and pulmonary airways visually. The necessity of the procedure is decided by the physicians of the department, thus the patients should be examined in the department. Flexible bronchoscopy is performed by faculty members, two anesthetists and a nurse in a special room in Ward 35 or in an operating room, on certain days and at hours of the week. Patients should fast and not to drink even water during the period stated by the physician and they should arrive at the department at 08:30 in the morning. Before the procedure, patient is made sleep by the anesthetist, patient does not feel any pain and does not remember anything after waking up. They are recommended not to for two hours following the procedure, to be nourished firstly with liquid and then with solid foods. The patients who are followed up and X-rayed in the department during the afternoon are discharged from the hospital, if a complication does not develop. After the operation, increased short-term cough, small amount of bleeding along with cough and high fever may be observed in patients; do not panic in such cases, give the patient antifebrile and consult the relevant physician.

It is required for the patients to come from General Pediatric Outpatient Clinic or to be examined in the inpatient service. (Period of time is not considered)
Children between the ages of 0 and 17 can be examined.
