Malnutrition is seen in every one out of three hospitalized patients. Malnutrition is the situation in which the individuals do not receive sufficient nourishment to meet one's needs. Besides the extension of hospitalizing periods, increased complications and serious results including death can be seen in patients with malnutrition.
The nutritional support treatments should be applied to the patients, who are already with malnutrition when hospitalized or cannot nourish orally for a long period of time due to various reasons. This treatment can be applied to stomach and intestines, or directly intravenously, according to the overall status of the patient and the functionality of stomach-intestinal system.
The Nutrition Support Team has been established in 1994 at Hacettepe University Hospitals, and the service has been given to inpatients hospitalized at the medical departments. Nutrition support has been given to outpatients since 2012, in outpatient clinics. Specialist doctors, dieticians, nurses, clinical pharmacists and other medical staff are included in the team. Nutrition support team assesses patients in respect to nutrition. The team assists in treatment team of patients by planning the appropriate nutrition support treatment, assessing the efficiency of treatment as well as complications.
